THE PROBLEM OF EVIL: WHY DOES EVIL EXIST IF GOD IS GOOD? BY MICHAEL FELIX

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL: WHY DOES EVIL EXIST IF GOD IS GOOD?

One of the deepest and most difficult questions in Christianity is this:

If God is loving, powerful, and holy, why does evil exist in the world?

People ask this question when they see pain, suffering, injustice, sickness, war, betrayal, death, and heartbreak. Many wonder why a good God would allow terrible things to happen. This mystery has challenged human understanding for generations, yet the Bible gives wisdom, hope, and truth concerning the problem of evil.

The Bible teaches that God did not create evil. In the beginning, God created the world perfect, beautiful, and without sin. Genesis 1:31 says:

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”

There was no death, suffering, hatred, or pain in the beginning. Humanity lived in perfect fellowship with God. However, evil entered the world through sin and human disobedience. When Adam and Eve chose to rebel against God in the Garden of Eden, sin entered creation, and with sin came suffering, fear, pain, and death.

Romans 5:12 explains:

“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.”

Sin corrupted the world God created. Humanity’s rebellion opened the door for darkness, brokenness, and evil. Since that moment, the world has experienced the consequences of sin in every generation.

But even though evil exists, God remains holy and good. James 1:13 says:

“God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.”

God does not delight in suffering or wickedness. Evil is the result of a fallen world separated from God’s perfect will.

One reason evil exists is because God gave humanity free will. God created human beings with the ability to choose love, obedience, or rebellion. True love cannot be forced. Without free will, humans would be like robots without genuine relationship or choice. Unfortunately, many people choose selfishness, violence, hatred, greed, and sin.

Deuteronomy 30:19 says:

“I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life.”

God allows choices, but choices have consequences. Much of the evil in the world comes from human decisions driven by sin and selfishness.

Another difficult truth is that Satan also operates in the world. The Bible describes Satan as the enemy who seeks to destroy lives and oppose the purposes of God. Jesus said in John 10:10:

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Spiritual darkness is real, and the Bible teaches that believers are engaged in spiritual warfare. Yet even Satan operates under God’s ultimate authority. God remains sovereign over all creation.

One of the greatest examples of suffering in the Bible is the story of Job. Job was a righteous man who experienced painful loss, sickness, and heartbreak. He lost his wealth, his children, and his health, yet he still trusted God. Throughout his suffering, Job questioned God and struggled to understand why evil had touched his life.

Job 1:21 says:

“The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The story of Job teaches that humans cannot always understand God’s purposes. Sometimes suffering remains mysterious. Yet God is still present even when life feels painful and confusing.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways.”

There are moments when people cannot fully understand why tragedy happens. However, Christians believe that God can bring purpose even out of suffering. Romans 8:28 gives hope by saying:

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

This does not mean everything that happens is good. Evil is still evil, and suffering is still painful. But God is able to redeem broken situations and bring healing, growth, strength, and testimony through difficult seasons.

The greatest proof that God understands suffering is found in Jesus Christ. God did not remain distant from human pain. Through the Incarnation, Jesus entered the suffering of humanity. He experienced betrayal, rejection, sorrow, injustice, torture, and death on the cross.

Isaiah 53:3 says about Jesus:

“He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.”

Jesus understands human suffering because He lived through it Himself. On the cross, He carried the sins of the world and defeated the power of evil through His resurrection.

The cross proves that evil does not have the final word. Satan intended destruction, but God brought salvation through Christ. What looked like defeat became victory.

1 Corinthians 15:57 says:

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Bible also promises that evil will not last forever. One day, God will remove pain, suffering, death, and wickedness completely. Revelation 21:4 gives this powerful promise:

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

For believers, this world is not the end of the story. God’s final plan is restoration, justice, peace, and eternal life with Him.

The problem of evil remains one of the greatest mysteries in human existence. Yet Christianity teaches that even in a broken world, God is still loving, still sovereign, and still working. Evil may exist for a season, but God’s goodness, truth, and kingdom will ultimately triumph forever.

No matter how dark life becomes, believers hold onto this hope:

God is present in suffering, powerful over evil, and faithful to His promises.
